Background: Risk factors for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM) are closely related to unhealthy lifestyles such as being overweight, obese, and lacking in physical activity. Adabiah 2 High School in Padang is a school with the highest percentage of students having risk factors, namely overweight at 22.9% and obesity at 29.1%. This study aims to determine differences in the knowledge and attitudes of adolescents about the prevention of Type 2 DM using the Emo-Demo method.
Methods: This research is a Mixed Method research with qualitative research using explanatory and quantitative studies using one group pretest-posttest design. This research was conducted in September 2022 - June 2023. The informants for this research were Person in charge of the Non-Communicable Diseases Program, UKS teachers, students, language experts, and media experts. The population of all this study are 10th grade students 290 people with a random sampling of 72 respondents.
Results: The results of the qualitative study obtained the Emo-Demo module according to the needs of adolescents regarding the prevention of risk factors for Type 2 DM. In the quantitative study, the average values of knowledge before and after being given the intervention were 13.69 and 16.79. The average attitude scores before and after being given the intervention using the emo-demo method were 52.38 and 59.26. There was a significant increase in changes in knowledge (p-value = 0.0005) and attitude (p-value = 0.0005).
Conclusion: This study concludes that there are differences in the knowledge and attitudes of adolescents about the prevention of risk factors for Type 2 DM using the Emo-Demo method at Adabiah 2 High School, Padang. It is hoped that the Emo-Demo method can be developed for other health problems.
